Message from the president:

Welcome to the AAUW Allentown Website!

We are part of a National Organization which is celebrating nearly 130 years of promoting education and equity for women and girls and being a catalyst for change. Our local Allentown branch is very active and we offer monthly branch programs which are open to the Public. They give us an opportunity to hear experts discuss topics of interest to us on a local, state or national level as well as a time to renew and deepen friendships.

We also have created several projects to help support the education of local women and girls such as a Dictionary Project which supplies dictionaries to girls and boys in third grade who might otherwise never own a dictionary. Another undertaking is “Let’s Read Math” which aims to encourage boys and girls to enjoy Mathematics in their everyday lives.

We hold a yearly Book Sale for five days in October. With the generous donation of used books from the community we raised over $25,000 last year which was awarded in scholarships to women attending local schools of higher education after a six months’ or more interruption in their studies. This is our only major fund raiser and it takes many hands many hours to set up, sort and sell used books but the gratitude from the scholarship recipients more than makes up for the time we spend preparing.

We have several study and interest groups which meet monthly and offer our members lifelong learning and allow them to meet other college educated women with similar interests.

You can go to the National AAUW’s new website at www.aauw.org and look for the “AAUW Experience” to learn more. The virtual tour features a town square surrounded by buildings representing a community center, a town hall, a courthouse, an office building, and a college campus. Starting in the town square, you can see the sights yourself or hear from a guide who will get you started in each building. It’s easily accessible and fun to use.

We offer you the chance to work at supporting other local women and to meet interesting college educated women who believe in the same ideals you do. We contribute to a more promising future and provide a powerful voice for women and girls. I hope you will consider joining our organization so you too can enjoy the benefits of a nation-wide organization and the warmth of the local members.
